As we look back on 10 years of Full Court Peace, we have been touched by a number of people and stories along the way. But no story and person has touched our hearts and continues to make an impact more than AJ Cina. Three years ago, the 12-year-old from Weston, Connecticut passed away after a bike accident and since then his friends, family and us here at Full Court Peace have helped keep his story alive.
A foundation was created in AJ’s memory, a basketball court in Cuba was dedicated and named after AJ, and recently, Joe Cina, shared thoughts of his son with FCP in hopes of inspiring others to make the most of each day and show appreciation to those who keep his family and AJ’s life going strong through their kind words, support and outreach around the world.
AJ was a very special young man with the gift of connecting with people and making everyone in his presence feel loved and special. In the words of his best friend Derek, “he was perfect!” He was a loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, teammate, and friend. He was a kind and gentle soul. Generous, pure in heart, with a wicked sense of humor. He was loved by everyone who knew him.
AJ’s natural athletic ability was eclipsed by his pure joy for playing sports. He simply loved to play and have fun, and it raised everyone’s spirits around him. He loved baseball, basketball, and soccer, and was a big fan of the Yankees, Giants, and Knicks. He shared his passion for his teams with all his family and friends.
AJ made the world a better place, and life as we knew it will never be the same. We lost a shining star, and he is dearly missed by all those who knew him. AJ will continue to live on in our hearts, and his spirit will continue to make the world a better place.
